Compression Stockings in pregnancy

In pregnancy the veins of the body are working harder to pump the blood up to the heart and they are not able to do that with the added weight of the baby as well as the expanded belly. In pregnancy because of blood pooling in the lower part of the leg it cause it to swell and also there are leg cramps that go alongside.

That said what you need to do is visit your doctor and ask for some advice on the kind of compression socks that you should be wearing.

Then comes the kind of compression stockings in pregnancy you will need. The support socks as they are called come in various compression ratios which are measure in mmHg that can help you decide how much pressure you want to apply at the ankle. In the support socks the most pressure is applied on the ankles and the pressure is lessened as the socks reach the knees.

Then there are the ones which are only till the knee where as there are several which thigh high or panty hose.

The cost of those stockings will vary based on the brand and the most famous brand is the jobst compression socks. The cost can start from $ 20 and can go up till $100. As they internet is the bets thing to happen and you can have the things available at a discount with coupon codes and all if you so desire and search properly on the net. The cost in the case of pregnancy may very well be covered by the insurance companies. I have not checked that but you can check that before buying the stockings as they have been medically advised I am sure that these are covered by the insurance companies.
Tip: In pregnancy if you need to be on the treadmill use the special treadmill mat for the same.

So good luck with your pregnancy and good bye top swelling of legs

Do compression stockings improve performance of athletes?

This has long been a hotly debated question with regards to athletes and their dresses. Every year a new fad will come in which will cause the sports community to look for greater what is ethical versus what is unethical. Then comes the questions what the raw athletic prowess will do versus the clothing will do.

There was cycling clothing that came into being and became a fad then came special body hugging swimming costumes and then the compression stockings.
Not to mention the steroids in athletics though it has nothing to do with clothes but yes very very controversial.

The claim to fame of athlete compression socks is that with improved circulation there is less fatigue and hence improved performance. These also claim that since there is compression there are no muscles which are loose and are therefore tightly and snugly fit with the body helping to achieve performance. That is some description that I read for on of the manufactures of these types of socks.

These offer of course the graduated compression which I explained in one of my earlier posts but also there is cushion for absorbing shocks for athletes. This graduated compression starts at the ankle and loosens up till it reached the calf.

The effectiveness of this has been well debated and people are beginning to see athletes with socks till their calf’s which are very much compressed but do the doctors and sports enthusiasts support them is a question that is yet to be answered.

Controversy or no controversy athletes have started wearing them and it is atleast good as it has some cushion in them to prevent damage from the shocks that athletes endure while running.
There are experts who have done study about the effectiveness of these and I will dig up the reference publications and list them here for people to understand and use them based on their needs especially sportsmen looking for athletes compression socks.

Why do you need graduated compression socks

The legs have veins which can get tired very easily with our daily activity as well as inactivity.
That said what we need to understand is how the blood flows back from the legs to the heart and how the gravity plays role in it.

What basically happens is that in general the veins supply the blood back to heart and it is those very veins which when either damaged or because of gravity will be unable to send the blood back to the heart. When that happens there are chances of a blood clot happening and causing the sever fatigue or damage to the heart.

There are several diseases associated with this vein problem and the major ones being the venous thrombosis or varicose veins or edema.
All these diseases need special care by way of exercising or swimming or wearing of graduated compression socks.

Exercising and swimming work the calf muscles and the thigh muscles which in turn provide increased circulation of the blood back to the heart and that helps provide against the blood getting together at the end of the ankle.

In most cases the job demands are such that you either need to stand for long hours say security guards on duty or sit for long hours say the customer support people who answer phone calls and can never leave their desk and are sitting for long hours.

The best way is to avoid sitting or standing for long hours and instead have a break for five minutes and exercise. Even with exercise the doctors have now started recommending the graduated compression socks as that will help the pressure to be applied at the ankles and what means usually is that you will wear those socks instead of the normal socks.

Note : If you have warts then please do not wear these socks and make sure you get some cure for warts.

There are four different types of pressure ranges that you can choose from to get the desired socks.

What are travel compression socks and do you need them?

Travel compression socks are nothing but the compression socks which are made specifically to give a relaxing fit while travelling as well as to help you get the peace of mind that your blood is not going to pool in your feet or the lower extremities of the leg.

That said what is embolism or the deep vein thrombosis the reason is that mostly while flying and sitting in an economy style chair for long hours you can potentially get your blood to start pooling up in legs . That happens because of lack of movement of the legs for long periods of time.

I have travelled to India and China and even To Australia and always worn a pair of compression socks. The flights to all these destinations have been more than 18 – 20 hours and I have never felt the fatigue or weakness in my legs and foot thanks to the special support socks that I have.
The reason is not very hard to fathom and in plain English here is what happens to the legs when the socks are worn.

The socks apply pressure at the ankle and the pressure gradually lessens as the socks reach the knee. With pressure at the ankle the blood is pressurized to go above the area and circulate, reach the heart and circulate back again as opposed to not circulate and sit right their in the feet because of gravity.

The pressure is measure in mmHg and the socks in come in varying pressure like 15 mmHg or the 22mmHg. They are made of mostly Nylon, Lycra and Spandex.
There are various styles that have been there like the socks which will go over calf till the Thigh or only till the calf.
Tip : To avoid anoring during flights alos use the HomeRemedy for Snoring
So your best bet is to get travel compression socks if you are travelling long hauls across the continents or you have already a medically condition like edema.

Welcome to my blog

Welcome to my blog about the compression socks and stockings. The reason I started this blog is that while I was recommended the wearing of these socks there is very less amount of information available about the socks and how and where to buy them .

Apart from Wikipedia which lists in three four lines what compression socks are there is nothing much available as a comprehensive guide for compression stockings.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say
“Compression stockings are used to support the venous and lymphatic systems of the leg. They offer graduated compression where maximum compression is achieved at the ankle and decreases as you move up the leg. This compression, when combined with the muscle pump effect of the calf, aids in circulating blood and lymph fluid through the legs”

The main reasons why the compression socks are in demand is it provides help to patients who are being treated medically for the pooling of blood in their lower part of the legs called edema or varicose veins. Then some passengers who travel long hours by air and are seated for long also need to be treated for deep vein thrombosis.

The compression socks basic aim is to apply the pressure at the ankles and gradually apply less pressure at the top and that means increased circulation of blood.

In my next few posts about the compression sock I am going to talk about all the causes of pooling of the blood and how these socks help. The other thing to know is diabetic compression socks are opposite to normal therapeutic socks also known as the support socks.

If you have any thoughts and questions about the blog do let me know on my email address listed here.
